Frances Hoban is a Naarm / Melbourne-based emerging artist. Her work follows from a lineage of landscape abstraction, preferring to capture the essence of place over literal representation.

Growing up in rural Victoria, as the daughter of farmers, she was surrounded by open paddocks, aged eucalypts, and rocky creek beds. This imagery settled deeply into her imagination and continue to resurface throughout her practice.

Her paintings often begin quickly — working en plein air or from immediate sketches — allowing instinct to guide her first impressions of place. Through this responsive process, she captures the shifting, dynamic energy of Australian landscapes. Colour and line form the core of her visual language, translating the rhythms, shapes, and atmospheres of the land into expressive, abstracted forms.
